They are Jewish, called "Rugelach", where ch is pronounced as a hard
aspirate h. Sort of between ch and h. And they are *wonderful* little
things. Here's a recipe for them:
INGREDIENTS
- 1 pkg. Dry Yeast
- 3 cups Flour
- 1 cup Butter
- 3 Egg Yolks
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Finely Chopped Walnuts
- 2 tsp. Cinnamon
INSTRUCTIONS
1> Sprinkle the yeast over the flour.
2> Add softened butter and blend.
3> Stir egg yolks into the sour cream and add to the flour mixture.
4> Form into a ball, wrap in foil, and refrigerate over night.
5> Combine the sugar, chopped walnuts, and cinnamon.
6> Divide the dough into 4 balls.
7> Spread the sugar mixture on a board.
8> Roll 1/4 of the dough into a 10 to 12 inch round, coating both sides
well with the sugar mixture.
9> Cut the rolled dough into 16 wedges.
10> Roll up from the wide end first.
11> Bake on a cookie sheet in a 325 degree oven for 30 minutes.
